Volunteer to Support the Sapulpa Historical Society
The museum hosts over a thousand visitors a year. We wish to greet our guests with a warm welcome and tell many stories of life in Sapulpa. We like to encourage any person looking for a volunteer opportunity to join us; all ages are welcome to volunteer!
We need volunteers in all categories! Volunteers can help with: Tour Guides, Collections, Special Events, and Internships.
*Our volunteers work in shifts, and most work only once a week. Our shifts include but not limited to:

TOUR GUIDES
Guides or docents provide in-depth programs or tours to scheduled visitors on a pre-selected topic. Programs and tours are provided for all ages. Tour guides are needed to engage visitors with objects and provide information on the historical significance, interpretation, culture of origin, uses, relevance, and the relationship to gallery artifacts.
Skills: Guides and docents should be able to talk to various age groups, be patient and courteous under all circumstances, answer endless questions, and maintain a warm and friendly attitude. Volunteers should also have a strong work ethic, knowledge of all museum exhibits, and the ability to interact with various group sizes.
Time requirement: 3-5 hours per week.*
Training: On-the-job training will be provided.
COLLECTIONS
Behind-the-scenes volunteers provide support services to the areas of the museum, including collections. For example, volunteering in collections includes data entry into PastPerfect, photographing, cataloging, mount-making, and proper artifact-handling.
Skills: Collections volunteers should have attention to detail and the ability to sit for long periods of time. They should enjoy working independently, be able to follow directions, and be able to do data entry on the computer.
Time requirement: 3-5 hours per week.*
Training: On-the-job training will be provided.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Special event hosts assist with a variety of duties for events held at the Sapulpa Historical Museum, including private parties, special openings, etc.
Skills: Responsibilities vary with each event and may include coat check, working as a gallery host, acting as security, etc.
Time requirement: Scheduling is on an as-needed basis.
INTERNSHIP
The Sapulpa Historical Museum is seeking interns for the education department. The intern will be exposed to a variety of tasks associated with museum education, including assisting with educational programming, marketing, and writing curriculum; working with volunteers; giving visitor overviews, guided tours, and living histories; and assisting with special events. A primary project will be assigned after acceptance, based on the student’s interests.
Skills: Interns should have interpersonal skills, customer service skills, the initiative to approach and engage students in a gallery setting, willingness to provide polite and assertive enforcement of museum rules, ability to stand for several hours, and knowledge of the museum galleries.
Time requirement: 5 to 20 hours per week or as needed.
Training: Prospective interns should be seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree in history, museum studies, public history, education, anthropology, or other related fields. Prospective high school volunteers needing volunteer or community service hours for their applications for colleges may also apply, too!

By sharing your lifetime of talent, interests, and experience, you can achieve results that will make a real difference in the quality of life in our community. YOU are needed.
